History
The Haverfordwest BBC television transmitter has been included to complement the history of Llanllawddog. The transmitter entered service in 1964 and BBC Research Report 1964/22 confirms the use of a GPO microwave link at that stage. A diagram shows an 8 ft dish on bearing 089, 278 ft up the 507 ft structure. BT Archives has no external views of the site but internal photos show GEC 2 GHz equipment at "Woodstock" which was the original Post Office name for the site.
Nearby Presely (Preseli PO/BT site) was chosen as the local transmitter site for UHF television from 1973 and another UHF transmitter at Carmel entered service for BBC2 in mid-1971. The Post Office distribution in the region was then optimised for 625-line colour service and we understand the BBC operated its own link from Carmel after 1972, most likely with conversion to 405-lines at Carmel. Haverfordwest thus was omitted from a mid-1970s list of Post Office sites.
(To complete the story, the VHF television service closed in January 1985. The site continued as an FM transmitter and UHF television was added in July 1990 - relaying Presely.)
