History
Preseli was built to serve an ITA VHF television transmitter, entering service in 1962. The site is known as Presely by the broadcasters. As was the case with many television sites, the Post Office dish was carried on the mast and accommodation provided within the main tramsmitter building. The BBC used a separate site at Haverfordwest. The spur to Preseli - referenced in early documentation as "Foel Drych" - formed part of a contract for the link from Cardiff (Wenallt) to Blaen Plwf, operating on 6 GHz, awarded to GEC late in 1961. It seems temporary provision may have been necessary to meet the launch date of Wales (West and North) Television - also known as Teledu Cymru. The other WWN transmitters were effectively relays of Presely since the cost and delay in obtaining Post Office links would not have been acceptable to the ITA.
UHF television was added in 1973 and the programme feeds in the region re-arranged to support the introduction of 625-line colour. BT diagrams from the mid-1980s show both IBA services at Preseli had SHF links however the BBC used an off-air feed from their site at Carmel. The programme source for the ITV VHF transmitter would have been converted from the 625-line feed.
