History

The BBC television transmitter at Tacolneston entered service in February 1955 however this was initially a temporary arrangement using a Post Office mast - the permanent BBC station was not completed until late 1956. Despite the initial history, Tacolneston did not develop as a Post Office site. It appears on the 1959 Network Map due to the links which were "existing or under construction" at that time.

The programme feed initially was via a 2 GHz link from Depden. From around 1959 a new, yet interim link from Birmingham was brought into use, running via Wickhambrook. Later this was diverted to run over a new route via Swaffham towards Stoke Holy Cross. This final arrangement used cable sections from Stoke Holy Cross to the studios in Norwich and back to the Tacolneston transmitter, with a Television Network Switching Centre (TVNSC) established at the central Norwich telephone repeater station (NC/D) on ??? street.

Tacolneston is not listed as a PO/BT microwave site in the 1970s and 1980s however 1908s diagrams relating to the TVNSC still refer to "Tacolneston Radio Station" as the BT premises serving the broadcast site. Direct SHF linking to Tacolneston probably ceased by the late 1960s once Stoke Holy Cross was fully operational.
