History

An article in PO Telecommunications Journal, Winter 75/76 reports that installation of the 300-channel SHF links for the Highlands and Islands scheme was completed in May 1973 with Dunure to Campbeltown. A map with the article indicates Dunure also linked to Brodick. In practice this was a successor to a six-channel VHF link between Dunure and Campbeltown which entered service in 1942, then operating on frequencies around 70 MHz. A 1957 OS map shows "Wireless Station GPO".

The SHF site re-used the original flat-roofed building, with a "Type 4A" tower carrying pairs of dishes for each link. By 2007 there were four dishes for each link - potentially this was a mixture of old and new during migration from 4 GHz to 6 GHz - and the height of the tower had been increased. More recent photos show removal of all but two dishes, both facing Brodick. Ofcom data indicates there is no longer a link to Campbeltown.

The dishes installed in the 1970s were relatively small and of an open-face design. They face Brodick (left) and Campbeltown (right) and two dishes were used for each link to provide "height diversity" on the over-water paths.

An extra section has been added to the tower. The covers on the top and bottom dishes on the left appear to be deteriorating and it seems the top and bottom dishes on the right, with the Andrew Antennas "flash", were possibly installed at a different time to the others.

Only the "middle" dishes facing Brodick remain.
