Caldbeck entered service as an ITA VHF transmitter for Border Television in September 1961. The site was selected to be the UHF transmitter for the area, with services starting in autumn 1971. Although included on PO/BT lists of Microwave Stations, network diagrams from the 1980s show the trasmitter fed by cable from Carlisle. It appears any SHF link was probably on a temporary basis. As with similar sites the Post Office facility was likely to have been a dish on the broadcast mast and a segregated area within the main building.
